How to check an email address you’ve created

Once you’ve created a new email account using cPanel you will need to configure your email client to access that account, otherwise you won’t be able to download the emails you receive and you won’t be able to send emails from the account you have created!

What is an email client

An email client is a program that you run which connects to the server that your email account is hosted on and sends and receives mail through that account. There are many different email clients that you can choose between. Some popular ones are:

  • Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express
  • Thunderbird
  • Apple Mail

There are some excellent resources available on the Internet explaining how to configure email clients, so we won’t attempt to replicate that information here. Our favourite resource is provided by Google® (How do I configure my mail client?).

WebMark Designs email settings

What you won’t get from Google’s help page is the specific settings that you need to connect to an email account hosted by WebMark Designs. You will need the following settings in order to make your email client connect to our servers:

POP3
server address
mail.yourdomain.com substituting your actual domain for yourdomain.com. This is the address your email client will connect to when it is checking whether you have any new emails to download
SMTP
server address
mail.yourdomain.com substituting your actual domain for yourdomain.com. This is the address your email client will connect to when it is sending emails
Use SMTP
Authentication
Yes. You must set your email client to use SMTP authentication. The username and password for SMTP authentication are the same as those used for POP3 authentication
Username This will be the email address of the account you have created but with the @ symbol replaced by the + symbol. Eg. The username for the email address name@email.com becomes name+email.com. If your email client has any difficulty with using the + symbol you can also try : and %. And if all else fails, then you may be able to use the @ symbol, depending on your mail client.
Password You choose your password when you create an email account. If you’ve forgotten your password you can reset it using CPanel

Some problems you may encounter

You can receive but you can’t send

  1. Make sure you have configured your client to use SMTP authentication for outgoing emails
  2. Double-check that your username and password are entered correctly
  3. Double-check that you have entered the correct SMTP server address
  4. Ensure that you do not have a firewall blocking port 25 or blocking your email client program

After performing all these checks, if you still can’t connect then your problem is most likely one of the following:

  1. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is blocking your SMTP traffic
  2. Our server thinks you are trying to send spam

In either case you can solve this problem by re-configuring your email client to use your ISP’s own SMTP server. As an example, if you are using Telstra Bigpond for your Internet you can use the SMTP server address of mail.bigpond.com for your outgoing emails. (This will replace the mail.yourdomain.com address mentioned above). If your ISP is not Bigpond then you will need to determine what their SMTP server address is. You should be able to find this somewhere on the ISP’s website.

Also, please contact us to inform us of your difficulty so that we can check whether our server is blocking your emails as spam. Please visit www.whatismyip.com to determine your computer’s IP address and provide this in your message to us.

You can’t send or receive

  1. Make sure that you have an active Internet connection (to test this try performing a Google search with a keyword who have never searched before - if you don’t get any results then your connection may be down)
  2. Double-check that you have entered the correct SMTP & POP3 server addresses (see settings above)
  3. Double-check that you have entered the username and password correctly (see settings above)
  4. See above for more things to check on your outbound connection
